Site Inspection
Right then, boss. I’ve had a proper walk-through, front to back, and I’ll tell you straight: this ain’t a simple change of perspective. This is a building site. But fair enough, you wanted a change of perspective fitted in, says so on the work order, so I’ll fit you one. Hardly the first time I’ve done a job like this.
Let’s start with the viewpoint. The viewpoint isn’t load-bearing, spotted that straight away. Wobbles if I so much as lean on it. Whoever installed it clearly didn’t own a spirit level. Just eyeballed the whole thing. And you don’t build foundations by eye. Comes back to bite you, usually when you’re least expecting it.
Now then, this sightline you’ve run right through the property. Probably seemed like a good idea once upon a time. Problem is, these days you can stand in the lounge and look straight into the structural frame, and nobody wants that. Who put this in for you? Was outdated fifty years ago. And your vanishing point isn’t where it’s supposed to be either. It’s wandered off somewhere behind the neighbour’s place. I wouldn’t go there myself, and I certainly wouldn’t send you.
Hang on, I’ll take a photo.
[He dials a number.]
Alright, mate. Bet you’re grinning already now you’ve seen my name pop up. Sent you the photo. Whether I’ve lost the plot? That’s exactly why I’m ringing. Show me one bloke round here who can do what you do, and I’ll stop bothering you this instant. Honestly, straight away. Trouble is, there isn’t one. That’s why we’re still on the phone, and that’s why you’re the best. No point pretending otherwise.
[...]
Right then, where was I?
The load-bearing wall. Well, it likes to think it’s holding something up, but if I tap it with a finger it sounds hollow. Hollow’s rarely a good sign. Usually means someone boxed something in. Not because it belonged there, mind you. Just because they didn’t fancy looking at it anymore.
And that gold finish you’ve put over the top? Doesn’t help one bit. Quite the opposite. It’s the very first thing I notice. And the first thing I notice is usually the bit someone’s trying hardest to hide.
You’ve moved insight down into the basement. Your decision, of course. Everyone’s entitled to make decisions. But if insight hasn’t got a window, it stops being a room. Becomes a cell instead. And I’m not installing a change of perspective in a cell. At best I’d leave you a toolbox down there, for later.
If this whole place stood, oh... fifteen— no, a hundred and fifty yards further that way, it’d actually make proper sense. No sarcasm. Real sense. You’d have a view for free, wouldn’t even need me to fit another window. But here, where you’ve built it, you’re working against the hillside. And you only build against a hillside once. After that, the hillside starts building against you.
You blocked off the view with that extension in 2019, didn’t you? I’ve seen houses where the view was the only thing they still had going for them. Then someone sticks an extension right in front because, “Well, we needed the extra space.” Now all you’re looking at is a fire wall, and the fire wall’s looking back at you. Neither one’s particularly pleased about the arrangement.
The clear view you asked for? I can give you that. But only if you actually want the breakthrough. No halfway jobs. Either you keep the wall, or you get the view. You don’t get both. Never seen it happen, and I’ve been doing this trade long enough.
So here’s my quote.
I’ll take out the viewpoint, prop everything up while we’re at it, realign the sightline towards the vanishing point instead of the neighbour’s garden, open up the load-bearing wall exactly where it was hollow anyway, bring the insight up out of the basement to where it belongs, and I’ll leave the gold finish off altogether.
Never solved a problem, that stuff. Just made one look prettier. Change of perspective. Properly installed. That’s how I’d do it. But what you decide to do once I’ve packed up and gone—
Well, boss...
That part isn’t on my work order.
